Curaçao has more than 35 named beaches, and no two feel quite the same. At the west end you find quiet limestone coves with water so clear it almost looks fake. Near Willemstad it's beach clubs, rows of loungers, and a DJ on weekends. The complication is distance. They're spread right across the island, and the finest ones sit out at the far western tip, a real drive from town with little public transport to get you there.
This guide sticks to the beaches I'd actually send a friend to, with the one detail most lists leave out: what each costs, and how long it takes to reach from Willemstad once you land. Choose two or three, sketch out your driving, and a short trip stretches a lot further.
Cas Abao
If you can only fit in one west-coast beach, make it Cas Abao. It's a wide curve of soft white sand with calm, turquoise water and a proper setup behind it: bar, restaurant, showers, and lounger rental. National Geographic has named it among the best beaches anywhere, and on a clear morning you'll see the reason. Cas Abao charges an entrance fee of about US$6 per car on weekdays and US$7 on Sundays. Extra passengers beyond four pay a little more, and chairs run about US$3. Reckon on a 30 to 40 minute drive west of Willemstad.
Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi)
Grote Knip is the one you've probably already seen in photos. It's a horseshoe bay backed by low cliffs, with impossibly bright water and a sandy slope that drops gently before going deep enough for the local cliff-jumpers. There's no entrance fee (you only pay if you want a lounger), and a snack truck stands in for a full restaurant, so bring water and a towel. It sits in the Westpunt area at the far northwest of the island, a 45 to 50 minute drive from Willemstad. Come earlier in the day for parking and shade.
Klein Knip (Playa Kenepa Chiki)
A few minutes' drive from its bigger sister, Klein Knip is a smaller, more sheltered cove with the same gorgeous colour and a calmer, family-friendly feel. Entry is free and the whole place is very low-key, with limited facilities, so pack your own snacks. Since it's right next to Grote Knip, the same 45 to 50 minute drive from Willemstad gets you to both, which makes them an easy pair to combine on one trip west.
Playa Porto Mari
Porto Mari is a favourite with snorkelers, thanks to a double coral reef just offshore, and it's known for the friendly pigs that sometimes wander the sand. On site you'll find a restaurant, loungers, and a dive shop. The entrance fee is modest, around ƒ5, or roughly US$3 per person. It's on the southwest coast, a 30 to 40 minute drive from Willemstad along reasonable roads.
Playa Lagun
Tucked between two cliffs, Lagun is a tiny fishing-village beach with sheltered, glassy water. It's one of the easiest snorkelling spots on the island, and a reliable place to spot turtles offshore. Entry is free, and there's a small dive school with a couple of casual eateries nearby. Lagun lies in the west, near Westpunt, a 40 to 45 minute drive from Willemstad. Parking is tight, so it pays to arrive early.
Playa Grandi (Playa Piskado) — swim with turtles
This is the beach visitors remember most. Playa Grandi, also called Playa Piskado, is a working fishing beach where the catch gets cleaned off the pier, and the scraps draw green sea turtles right up into the shallows. Snorkel out a short way and you'll likely share the water with several of them. Entry is free, loungers and umbrellas can be rented, and it's at the far western end near Westpunt, a 45 to 50 minute drive from Willemstad. Keep a respectful distance from the turtles and never touch them.
Jan Thiel
Over on the eastern side, Jan Thiel is the polished beach-club option, with restaurants, bars, shops, calm swimming, and a lively weekend scene. The beach charges about US$3 per person, and entry is free after 4:30pm if all you want is sunset drinks. It's close to town, a 15 to 20 minute drive from Willemstad, which makes it the easiest "real beach" day when you don't want to drive far.
Mambo Beach (Sea Aquarium Beach)
The closest proper beach to the capital, Mambo sits inside the Sea Aquarium complex, with a long boardwalk of restaurants, bars, and shops. The water is sheltered and shallow, which suits families, and admission is small at about US$3.50. It's just a 10 to 15 minute drive from central Willemstad, so it's the natural choice if you have a short layover or no rental car.
How to get to Curaçao's beaches
For the west coast, rent a car. There's not really a way around it. Curaçao's beaches are scattered, and public buses rarely reach the western ones like Grote Knip, Cas Abao, and Lagun. The simplest plan is renting a car at Curaçao Airport when you land. The major agencies have desks at arrivals, and you'll be on the road within minutes. The airport is only about 20 to 25 minutes from town, so you can pick up the car, drop your bags, and head straight to a beach the same day.
Not driving? You still have good options for the closer beaches. A metered taxi works well for Mambo or Jan Thiel; see our notes on airport taxis for typical fares and where to find the rank. Many hotels also arrange a resort & beach transfer, which is the easiest way to reach a far west-coast beach without tackling the winding roads yourself. And if you just need to get to your hotel first, our guide to getting from the airport to Willemstad covers your options end to end.
Which beach should you choose?
Short on time, or no car? Pick Mambo or Jan Thiel. Both are close to Willemstad and fully equipped. After the classic Caribbean cove for photos and swimming? Drive west to Grote Knip and pair it with Klein Knip. Snorkelers should aim for Porto Mari or Lagun, and anyone hoping to swim with turtles should keep half a day free for Playa Grandi. If you only manage one all-rounder, Cas Abao covers most bases: good sand, calm water, shade, food, and facilities.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car to reach Curaçao's best beaches?
For the west-coast beaches like Grote Knip, Cas Abao and Playa Lagun, yes. Public buses rarely run to that side of the island, so most visitors rent a car at the airport or use a taxi or resort transfer. Beaches near Willemstad, such as Mambo and Jan Thiel, are easier to reach without a car.
Which Curaçao beaches charge an entrance fee?
Several do, and the amounts are small. Cas Abao charges roughly US$6 per car on weekdays (US$7 on Sundays), Playa Porto Mari about US$3 per person, Jan Thiel around US$3 per person (free after 4:30pm), and Mambo Beach about US$3.50. Grote Knip, Klein Knip, Playa Lagun and the turtle beach Playa Grandi are free.
What is the best beach in Curaçao for swimming with turtles?
Playa Grandi, also called Playa Piskado, at the far western end near Westpunt. Local fishermen clean their catch off the pier, which draws sea turtles close to shore. Entry is free and it is about a 45–50 minute drive from Willemstad.
What currency do Curaçao beaches use?
Since March 2025 the local currency is the Caribbean guilder (XCG), pegged at about 1.79 to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, including beach kiosks and fee booths, so you rarely need local cash, though small bills help.
