Have a few hours between flights? Curaçao International Airport (CUR) sits just 12 km, a 15 to 20 minute drive, from Willemstad, so even a short layover can be enough to glimpse the island's colourful capital or unwind by the sea before you fly on.

How long a layover do you need?

Roughly speaking, the longer your stop, the further you can stray from the terminal. Treat the guide below as a starting point, and always leave a comfortable buffer to clear security on the way back.

Nip into Willemstad's old town

The historic centre of Willemstad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, listed as the "Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour", and is famous for its row of candy-coloured Dutch colonial houses along the waterfront. A taxi gets you there in about 15 to 20 minutes. The old town splits across Sint Anna Bay into the Punda and Otrobanda districts, linked by the Queen Emma Bridge, a pedestrian-only floating pontoon bridge first opened in 1888 that swings aside to let ships pass. Wander the two sides, cross the bridge, then grab a coffee or a bite before heading back. The quickest way in and out is a licensed airport taxi; agree the fare before you set off, as taxis use fixed zone prices rather than meters.

A quick beach stop

With a longer layover you can swap the city for the sea. Mambo Beach, on the coast just south-east of Willemstad, is about 16 km from the airport and roughly a 20 minute drive, and bundles a swimming beach with beach clubs and casual dining in one spot, which makes it easy to fit into a few spare hours. The simplest approach is a pre-booked transfer or taxi that waits for you, so you are not relying on the limited local bus to get back in time for your flight.

Or stay airside

  • Short on time? After security you will find cafés, duty-free shops, free Wi-Fi and seating, enough to recharge without leaving the terminal.
  • Keep watch on the clock: traffic and queues can vary, so build in a generous buffer to re-clear security before boarding.
  • Carry small cash: US dollars and the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) are both widely accepted, so you do not need to change much money for a quick visit.
