Quick answer: Plan on 3 to 4 days for a first taste of Curaçao (Willemstad plus a few western beaches) and 5 to 7 days for the full picture, with time for a Klein Curaçao boat trip, diving and the quieter west. The island is small, only about 60 km end to end, so you can base yourself in one place and explore by car.

How many days do you need in Curaçao?

Curaçao packs a lot into a small island: a colourful UNESCO capital, dozens of coves and beaches, easy world-class shore diving and dry, sunny weather for most of the year. How long you stay depends on your pace, but a useful rule of thumb is three days for a quick getaway, five days for a relaxed first visit, and a week if you want to add Klein Curaçao, more diving and the far west without rushing.

Because the island is compact, you do not need to change hotels. Most visitors base themselves in or near Willemstad or along the calmer southwest coast and make day trips from there.

3 days: a first taste

Day 1. Settle in and explore Willemstad on foot: the Handelskade waterfront, the floating Queen Emma Bridge, the Punda and Otrobanda districts and the floating market. Day 2. Head west for a full beach day at Cas Abao or Playa Kenepa (Knip), two of the island's most photogenic beaches. Day 3. Combine a morning snorkel at a calmer spot such as Playa Porto Mari or Playa Lagun with a relaxed afternoon before you fly home.

5 days: the sweet spot

With five days you keep the three-day plan and add the experiences that need more time. Give one day to a Klein Curaçao boat trip, an uninhabited island with a long white beach and clear water that takes most of the day. Use another for diving or snorkeling, since Curaçao is known for easy shore dives such as the Tugboat and the Mushroom Forest. That still leaves time to slow down and enjoy a sunset dinner in Willemstad.

7 days: a full week

A week lets you go further without packing your days. Add Christoffel National Park in the northwest for an early-morning hike or a drive among iguanas and rugged scenery, see the wild north shore at Shete Boka, and work through more of the western beaches at your own pace. A week is also long enough to take a rest day and simply enjoy your hotel or a quiet cove.

Getting around

For anything beyond Willemstad, a rental car makes Curaçao far easier: the best beaches and dive sites are spread along the west and public transport is limited. Taxis are fine for short trips and airport transfers but become expensive over several days. Driving is on the right and the main routes are straightforward; some beach access roads are unpaved, so a careful drive and a little extra time help.

Trip lengthRealistic forWhat you fit in
3 daysShort break or add-onWillemstad plus 2 western beaches
5 daysRelaxed first visitThe above plus Klein Curaçao and a dive day
7 daysA full weekThe above plus Christoffel Park, the north shore and rest days

Whatever length you choose, Curaçao rewards a slower pace, so it is better to see a little less and enjoy it than to rush the whole island.
